720p vs 1080p vs 4K for Playlist Downloads

How resolution choice changes file size, playback compatibility and readability — with a concrete rule for each type of content.

Resolution is the setting people over-think and under-plan. Over-think, because the highest available option is not automatically the right one. Under-plan, because the storage consequences of that choice compound across an entire playlist rather than a single file.

The size relationship is roughly geometric. Take one hour of typical content: about half a gigabyte at 720p, one to one and a half at 1080p, three to four at 1440p, and five or more at 2160p. Across a fifty-hour course, that is the difference between twenty-five gigabytes and two hundred and fifty. The content is identical.

So what does the extra resolution buy? Legibility of fine detail, and nothing else. On a phone screen, 720p and 1080p are close to indistinguishable at normal viewing distance. On a 27-inch monitor, 1080p is clearly better for anything with small on-screen text. On a large TV, 4K is visible if the source was genuinely shot in 4K rather than upscaled before upload.

That last caveat matters more than people realise. A large share of videos labelled 4K on YouTube were upscaled by the creator from a 1080p or 1440p master. Downloading those at 2160p gives you a much larger file containing no additional detail. If the footage looks soft at 1080p, more pixels will not sharpen it.

Content type gives you a clean decision rule. Talking heads, vlogs, interviews: 720p is plenty, and often generous. Tutorials with code, spreadsheets or slides: 1080p, because text legibility is the whole point. Technique, craft, dance, anything where small movements matter: 1080p and up. Cinematography, nature, anything you will watch on a large screen for pleasure: take the highest genuine resolution available.

Compatibility is the forgotten dimension. MP4 with H.264 plays on essentially every device made in the last decade, including car screens, older smart TVs and cheap tablets. VP9 in WebM is smaller at equal quality but fails outright on some of those. AV1 is smaller still and support is newer again. If the files are going anywhere other than a current phone or laptop, H.264 is the safe answer.

Frame rate quietly interacts with all of this. A 60 fps 1080p file is substantially larger than a 30 fps one at the same resolution, and for lecture content the extra frames add nothing. For gameplay or sport they add a great deal. Match it to the motion in the source, not to the maximum on offer.

The summary rule: choose 720p by default, step up to 1080p when on-screen detail carries information, and reserve 4K for genuinely high-detail source material you will watch on a large display. Then check your free disk space against the arithmetic before starting a long batch.
