Choosing the Right MP3 Bitrate for Playlist Downloads
Where the audible thresholds actually are for music and speech, why higher is not always better from a compressed source, and concrete settings per use case.

Bitrate arguments generate more heat than light, mostly because people compare settings without agreeing on the source or the content. Here is the practical version, framed around what you are actually converting: a playlist of YouTube videos, which is already compressed audio.
Start with that constraint, because it dominates everything else. YouTube serves audio as Opus or AAC at roughly 128 to 160 kbps for most uploads. Converting to MP3 is therefore a second lossy encode of an already-lossy source. Requesting 320 kbps MP3 does not recover anything the source lost — it simply preserves what remains more faithfully, at two and a half times the file size.
For speech — podcasts, interviews, lectures, audiobook-style content — 96 to 128 kbps is genuinely enough, and mono halves it again with no meaningful loss because voice is a centred, narrow-band signal. A three-hour interview at 96 kbps mono is about 130 megabytes. The same interview at 320 kbps stereo is over four hundred, and sounds identical on any headphones you own.
For music, the threshold sits higher because cymbals, reverb tails and stereo width are exactly what low-bitrate encoders discard first. 192 kbps is acceptable for casual listening on phone speakers; 256 to 320 kbps is where most people stop hearing artefacts on decent headphones. If you use M4A/AAC instead, you get roughly the same perceived quality at a smaller size.
Variable bitrate deserves a mention. VBR allocates more bits to complex passages and fewer to silence, which usually gives better quality per megabyte than a constant rate. Compatibility is a non-issue on modern players. If your tool offers VBR at a comparable quality target, take it.
Some concrete recommendations. Commute podcasts: 96 kbps mono. Lectures you will re-listen to: 128 kbps mono. Casual music on a phone: 192 kbps stereo. Music through real headphones or a car system: 320 kbps or M4A at 256. DJ or production use: the highest available, because time-stretching and EQ expose artefacts that passive listening hides.
Two things not worth doing. Do not convert an existing MP3 to a higher bitrate MP3 — that adds size and removes quality, every time. And do not chase lossless from a YouTube source; FLAC from a compressed input is a large file containing exactly the same information as the small one. If you need a true master, buy the release.
The general rule that survives every edge case: match the bitrate to the content and the listening environment, not to the biggest number available. A well-chosen 128 kbps file you actually have room for beats a 320 kbps file you deleted to free space.
