Downloading YouTube Playlists on iPhone and iPad

iOS is more restrictive than Android, but everything needed for playlist downloading works — it just routes through the Files app rather than a general-purpose download folder. Safari 15 and later handle this cleanly, and no shortcut, profile or sideloaded app is required.

When you tap a download link in Safari, the file goes to the Downloads folder inside Files, which by default lives on your device rather than iCloud Drive. That default is worth checking: if Downloads points at iCloud Drive and you are on cellular, you will upload every file you download, twice paying for the same data.

Format choice matters more on Apple hardware than elsewhere. M4A (AAC) is the native audio format across iOS, macOS and Apple Music, and it handles metadata and artwork more gracefully than MP3 does in that ecosystem. For video, MP4 with H.264 plays everywhere; WebM does not play in the native player at all, so avoid it on iOS.

The Files app is also where you organise. Create a folder per playlist, move the batch in, and rename with numeric prefixes if order matters. The stock Files app sorts by name, so the same two-digit prefix convention that works on desktop works here.

Getting audio into your music library is the one genuinely awkward step. iOS will not import arbitrary files into the Music app directly; the practical route is to sync through a Mac or PC, or to use a third-party player that reads from Files. Many people simply use a Files-aware player and skip the Music app entirely for downloaded content.

Storage management deserves attention on devices without expandable storage. Keep batches in a dated folder so you can delete an entire archive in one action once you have finished with it, and prefer audio-only for anything you will not actually watch — the size difference on a 64 GB iPhone is the difference between one course and ten.

Finally, iPads behave identically to iPhones here but make the review step much more pleasant. If you are archiving a long course, loading the playlist on an iPad and working down the list is noticeably less error-prone than doing it on a phone screen.
