The short answer: MP3 for audio-only, MP4 when the picture matters. The longer answer depends on device, storage, and what you're actually going to do with the files once they're on disk. Formats are boring, but picking the wrong one costs you either fidelity, storage, or compatibility — sometimes all three at once.

MP3 — the everywhere format
MP3 is universally supported. Every phone, car stereo, cheap MP3 player, smart TV, and hotel alarm clock built in the last two decades will play it. Files are small — roughly 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps, 2.4 MB per minute at 320 kbps.
The downsides are all shared by any lossy codec: compression artefacts on complex material, no video track, and ID3 metadata handling that varies subtly by player. But for a folder of songs going onto a decade-old head unit, MP3 is still the right call.

MP4 — when the picture matters

M4A — the quiet winner for music
M4A (AAC in an MP4 container) is what iTunes, Apple Music, and every modern streaming service actually uses under the hood. Same file size as MP3, better perceived fidelity, cleaner metadata handling, and cover-art support that just works. If your listening happens on Apple hardware, M4A is the answer.
The catch is legacy compatibility. Very old MP3 players don't decode AAC. If you might drag files onto a friend's old system or an ancient car stereo, MP3 is still the safer default.
